WebMoney Japan, WebMoney, Are They Related?

by User ImageBenson on January 11th, 2008

It’s confusing, and I’m asking help from everyone. Are they in anyway related? Check out Webmoney.jp and Webmoney’s official site, they don’t seem to be mentioning anything that’s relating to each other anywhere.

WebMoney

Webmoney.JP

The logos are totally different as well. I’ve read Webmoney.jp has prepaid solutions just like the Webmoney we love. Anyone could advice?

    Hi,

I don’t know much about “Webmoney” or how it works, so I could not tell if they work the same way.
I can only tell you from what “Webmoney.jp” tells me…

Firstly I can’t find anywhere they mention “Webmoney (wmtransfer.com)”.
    http://www.webmoney.co.jp/about/index.html shows their history:
Established in March, 1988 (”really?” had to be my typical reaction Lol)

    How it works:
You purchase a prepaid card, which has each unique 16 digits ID number, at any convenience store, by online-banking or credit card.

When you want to send money to an online merchant (game, music, image/mobile media,
astrology, books, digital goods, foods, hard/soft furnitures, etc.) enter that 16 digits ID number on merchant’s payment settlement form.

When you want to send money to an individual who has e-mail address, two parties communicate by e-mail, via webmoney’s management server.
You send money to the server using a 16 digits ID, where it is stored until you authorise
the final settlement. When you’ve done that, the other party receive money
from the server, using the same ID.

When I say “money” it’s of course digital money (they call it “point”).

Everytime you purchase a prepaid card, ID number differs. They have online “Wallet” system where you can manage all IDs in one acct. and pay directly from that “Wallet”.

I hope that helps :-) Perhaps you didn’t need all above; I just had to do that for myself too as I can hardly catch up with what’s going on in my home land there… Lol
If anything else you would like to know about the site let me know…!

Thanks for doing all these yuko, you must be from Japan judging from your nickname (or I’m wrong?)

From what I understand, Webmoney (without the jp) has also prepaid solutions which are very popular in Russia.

    Now that’s a pickle. hehe

The Russian operation (wmtransfer.com) is a 100% different company and operator. They are not related, I think .jp is infringing.

I ask WM about it about a month ago and they told me.

Mark! It’s good to see you again! But apparently WM.jp has been around for a long time too.

Hi again, Yes I’m originally from Japan, and living in UK for sometime now.

As far as domain registration is concerned, actually webmoney.jp was created 6 months before wmtransfer.com was… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not declaring a war here ;-)
I don’t think either of them harm the other, as wmtransfer.com don’t have a page in Japanese which means they don’t target Japanese market (majority of Japanese people wouldn’t even look at it) anyway; and webmoney.jp is in Japanese only which means they don’t target non-Japanese market anyway…

Whichever may have been the first to come up with this concept, adopting it to fit to other market’s needs that original one didn’t target, is not a bad thing, non…?
(not speaking of legal copy/patent right :p)

Btw there are still quite a few (VERY old though) entries found in Google, concerning Trojan in webmoney.ru (which still load the same page to wmtransfer.com)… I’m sure there must have been “resolved” history since then, though…?

Its a pity I don’t understand Japanese to try out webmoney.jp to see how exactly similar are they, but we’ll have to agree if its two seperate entities, they’re having a very different market segment.

Sidetracking, Japan is a really cool place. yuko, which part of Japan do you stay? I was at Shinnjuku in December, fantastic and impressive culture ;)

    I’ll visit again soon!

Chung, where are you from? Japan or somewhere else?

If you’re talking about Webmoney (not the Japan one), you can purchase the prepaid card from any WM machines or even vendors.

As for Webmoney Japan, since they’re both different entities, I’m not too familiar with that one.
