Is Skype Integrating Online Payments ?
Its more than just a rumor! Digital money insiders are saying that Skype the popular P2P telephony company is NOW in the process of implementing a new payment system over their infrastructure! At some close future date, we may all be seeing integrated chat & payments on our PC screens. Integrating a Skype payment system could then justify the reported $4+ billion dollar price tag eBay paid for Skype.
This ‘integration’ is no small task and would totally change the way we do business online. Imagine while chatting with your friend, vendor or retail customer, you agreed to make a quick payment then instantly send it while they instantly confirm it? Forget about the half dozen emails back and forth asking, “Did you get my payment?”. Wow, this is going to be a great new application.
Can Skype create this killer application? Will it happen soon? If chat is integrated with payments - the global market will be astronomical.
When asked, “Can they do it?” one digital money expert answered this way:
Here’s my answer: Yes, if they take small baby steps, then they may avoid the many bear traps of financial cryptography. That is, they at least have the track record for doing this in lower layer terms, and if they don’t rush it, they’ll pick up the hard higher layer lessons in time. * financialcryptography.com
We now known that Microsoft is developing an online payment system and others such as Google, AIM or Jabber seem to have the muscle for a strong attempt at such a product. So the next important question is, “Can any others do it?” The expert says:
Not a chance. Skype have the field fully open. Google, AIM, Jabber, and that MS thing (I don’t use it so don’t know what it is called) are so unsuited to the financial cryptography needs of chat plus payments that they haven’t a chance. To be honest, it will probably require dramatic changes in Skype’s architecture too — the difference is that they have *enough* in place to show they can pick up the rest, and survive the transition. The others have no chance, IMO.* financialcryptography.com
It seems the idea of Skype Online Payments has been around for several years as evidenced from this early 2005 discussion entitled, ‘Skype Payment API “SkypePay”’ from Connectotel
With SkypePay in place, the SkypeOut account is no longer only used to pay for PSTN telephone calls, but can now be used to make micropayments for other low-value goods and services. * connectotel.com
Perhaps eBay is just the company to make it happen.
