GreenZap Sues Bloggers

by Mark on February 14th, 2007

Ina Stiener over at AuctionByes.com dropped the bomb yesterday with a post about how GreenZap Inc. which is an online payments company, is now suing Liquid Web Inc. and Vodien Inc. for a total of $57.5 million. GreenZap’s press release from Monday stated,

“The suit is the first of many GreenZap is preparing against individual bloggers and hosting companies that maintain websites where defamatory comments are being posted concerning GreenZap and its executives.”

GreenZap had a bumpy opening in 2005 and seemed almost haunted by negative comments across the net. Ugly online statements about its principals did appear and often, although I can’t remember where. I’m not sure if anyone believed or really followed it all that much, but ugliness is definately something you want to avoid during your roll out.

GreenZap is an online payments - payment processing company trying to align themselves to ‘online shopping’ as opposed to P2P payments. Their web boasts lots of catchy marketing text about who they are and what they do, like this:

“Develop interactive technology to visually communicate and transact online. Hire a team of uniquely talented, experienced individuals committed to providing a top notch product with personalized service. And reward our members, our customers, for enabling us to grow.”

Well I don’t know about you, but I’m just blinded here by marketing. Having used most online processors I am always impressed when a company pushes their personnel and marketing over the actual product (insert sarcasm). While the web looks good, it takes a great deal of time to actually find the important info about any product or why I should use it over PayPal or e-gold. Generally since they offer the same product as 25 other online companies, I want to know their rates, up front and how they compare. I don’t want to have to go through a lengthy sign up, receive tons of marketing emails, then more marketing, before I can compare rates and services.

Its unfortunate I feel this way, but, if I go to a web and after 5 minutes of reading can’t tell exactly what the product is and why its better than the last, I usually pass on using that service. I said the same thing when they launched GreenZap, its just too much of a mystery for me. I know how online payment processing works. I know how to shop.

Why should I use GreenZap? That two line explanation, the reasons why, should be the first words on their web. Is there a Zap mobile so I can shop with my phone? That’s what I want to know.

It is just too many big words and too much fluff. However, I wish them the best of success and please don’t sue me.
